about

Eleanor Glanville was born during Cromwellian times when pretty much everything was deemed evil. Christmas was banned. Butterflies were evil spirits which spoilt butter & curdled cream. Women could be put for lunacy if they had any interests beyond embroidery. Glanville was fascinated by nature, in particular entomology. She risked alot to study butterflies and she made a connection with James Petiver who is now considered the first entomologist, and shared her studies with him, to assist his research. Her 2nd husband was a nasty piece of work & when she tried to escape him, he tried to get her put away so that he could seize her home & her wealth. She left everything in her will to research but after her death, the husband & oldest son over turned it on account of the fact that she was clearly mad, and they got it all. During her life, the scientific revolution began and it was very ordinary for men to "collect, classify & catalogue" but for women it was proof of your own insanity. Studying butterflies was a very dangerous thing to do.

lyrics

There's an evil in science
There's a witchcraft in the patience
Of the learned woman
Who watches the world.
There is madness in nature
And sooner or later
They will hunt you down.
Your mind is to bold.

Within this political crysalis
We hide, we liquify.
But we don't decide if we grow or die.
In this scientific revolution
Men collect & catalogue & classify
But a woman should not even chase a butterfly.

In the rushes & sedges
Women beating the hedges
Searching for something.
A parcel of wormes.
Lunacy must have touched her.
Somebody arrest her.
Only the strange ones
Have a longing to learn.

Within this political crysalis
We hide, we liquify.
But we don't decide if we grow or die.
In this scientific revolution
Men collect & catalogue & classify
But a woman should not even chase a butterfly.

Send for string & brown paper
Send a parcel to Petiver.
Evil spirits in a package.
Or so it would seem.
Watch this dancing demon
How could it be a reason
For spoiling the butter
Or curdling the cream.
