This Song is about Margerate Cavendish recognised as the 1st author of the 1st Sci-Fi novel ever written in 1666. Margaret Cavendish was viewed by her contemporaries as being rather eccentric. She was extravagent and flirtatious, accused of using speech full of 'oaths and obscenity', and was noted for her unusual sense of fashion. This reputation for eccentricity survives today, when Margaret is widely referred to as 'Mad Madge'.
Margaret's most notable achievement was literary. She was a prolific author, publishing poems, plays, literary critiques, volumes of 'observations' - even works on natural philosophy.
Cavendish was a poet, philosopher, writer of prose romances, essayist, and playwright who published under her own name at a time when most women writers published anonymously. Her writing addressed a number of topics, including gender, power, manners, scientific method, and philosophy. Her utopian romance, The Blazing World, is one of the earliest examples of science fiction. She is singular in having published extensively in natural philosophy and early modern science.
Cavendish has been championed and criticized as a unique and groundbreaking woman writer. She rejected the Aristotelianism and mechanical philosophy of the seventeenth century, preferring a vitalist model instead. She was the first woman to attend a meeting at the Royal Society of London, in 1667, and she criticized and engaged with members and philosophers Thomas Hobbes, René Descartes, and Robert Boyle. She has been claimed as an advocate for animals and as an early opponent of animal testing
lyrics
This blazing world.
Caught up on this wretched ship,
It keeps on sailing,
Creakin, crashing,
This ship is failing.
The sailors once frozen,
Are melting decay,
But in another dimension,
She is lifted away.
There are rivers & islands,
Towns built from diamonds,
Subtraction is death
But God has no emblem.
Who is your God?
Who is your God?
Where is your science?
Your religion, your language,
Your philosophy?
How many stars do you see?
In this blazing world.
Where is your air?
How does your wind blow?
And how do you know?
How do you learn?
How does your moon turn?
How does your sun burn,
in this blazing world
In this blazing world.
Your views are fake,
Watch them break,
See the world through your own eyes
Rip down these lies!
But truth lays us bare,
It steals our dispute,
In its presence all are wise...
Or all would be fools.
