This song is about Joan Proctor, a chronically ill person who dedicated her short life to reptile care. She designed the reptile house at London Zoo, with her understanding of reptile needs, glass and uv rays. She took care of the first komodo dragons in Europe, one of which would walk around the zoo by her side. When she became wheelchair bound, she would direct him by tapping his tail to let him know which way she was going. She devised instruments with which vets could treat ill reptiles and showed us that they respond to voice and are not deaf, as previously believed. As a girl, she disrupted her maths class by going to school with a crocodile.

Against a backdrop of pain,
The dragon whisperer smiles,
She walks amid the snakes and the crocodiles.
Girl in a garden beneath a grey London sky,
How could she hear the repiles cry.

She brings light to the reptile house,
She counts the teeth in a crocodiles mouth.
Regally adorned, snakes drip from her form.
She gives light to the reptile house.

Through the vita glass panes,
The lizards slither and slide,
In the sunlight, on the rocks, the reptiles hide.
Girl in a wheelchair, her body broken and tired,
With a dragon walking by her side.

At the sound of her voice, the deaf creatures come,
But the beasts were never deaf,
The humans were dumb.
Girl with a passion and on the day that she died,
Could she hear the reptiles as they cried.
