about

Mary Granville (1700-1788) was married off at the age of 17 to a miserable pensioner who lived in a cold cornish castle. She referred to the place as Averno - her own Hades. Her life here was bleak & isolated and when he died, she was not included in his will and was left with nothing other than her skills - French, sewing etc. With her language skills she acquired work, travelled to Ireland where she met her future husband, who she married much later in life. After his death she became adrift once more, this time with the sorrow of grief as oppose to the excitement of freedom. She was creative & loved flowers. One day, she absent mindedly began cutting paper petals and created a flower. In time, she made more. Botanists began to hear about her unual artwork & as an old lady, she still received gifts of flowers from men wanting her to create paper versions. And from here, began collage. A paper garden arose.

lyrics

Paper Garden.

The wind blows in from a Cornish Sea
These castle walls are no comfort to me.
Held by the cold of a marital bed
I see my breath before the books that I've read.
A prisoner to society
A teenage bride may call on death to set her free.
Language is a carriage that crosses the sea.
In an Irish garden grows a piece of me.

From the darkness of Averno
A tendril uncurls
A door is open & her freedom returns.
The prison crumbles with each flower that grows
From her Hades, a garden arose.
A paper garden arose.

No place to call home. No roots to hold down.
The way wildflower seeds on a breeze can be blown.
Love is a flower. She takes her time.
We all have our lives and I need to live mine.

My face is creased. My hands are worn.
Beautiful flowers still fall at my door.
I read everyone. Each unique creation.
With scissors & dye I invent imitations.
I cannot preserve moments. I cannot still time.
From such a dark place grew this paradise of mine.
A paper garden arose. A paper garden arose.
