Jijabai was born on 12 January 1598, as the daughter of Lakhuji Jadhav of Deulgaon, near Sindkhed, in present-day Buldhana district of Maharastra. She married young & although the couple led a happily married life, there was an enmity that brewed amongst the family members. This led to ill-feeling between her husband and her father, that tore Jijabai apart, having to choose between her husband and her father.
Jijabai had given birth to six children. Four died in infancy and only the two sons, Sambhaji and Shivaji, reached adulthood but Sambhaji was killed as a young man.
Jijabai was known to be an influential and determined woman who was an embodiment of self-respect and virtue. Famed for her fore-sight, Jijabai was herself an able warrior and administrator. She passed down her qualities to Shivaji, and instilled within him a sense of duty, courage and fortitude to overcome any hardship arising. With her stories, songs & love, she raised & guided Shivaji to be compassionate, to respect all women, to keep religious tolerance, and justice, and to love his country, his religion and his quest for freedom of Maharashtra. Shivaji owes his greatness to the inspiration of his mother who dedicated her life to bringing up her son to become one of the greatest rulers of the Maratha Empire.
lyrics
The Mother Jija.
I carved my grief and built you a palace.
My tears were the rain that watered your roots.
Kisses for armour. Stories for a steed,
I give you my heart to wear as your shield.
Hold this gift in the palm of your hand,
And when the time comes, give this gift to the land.
This gift is a vision, my vision of freedom.
Freedom is a foundation
And you'll build your kingdom.
Hold this gift in the eyes of your mind,
And when the time comes, give this gift to mankind.
This gift is respect. Respect for the living.
For the men and the women.
Keep my songs singing.
Hold this gift in the warmth of your soul,
And when the time comes, this gift finds you whole,
This gift is love. Love and compassion.
Love is a lesson
That we cannot hasten.
