about
We dont know how to make the payment link from this song go straight to a charity but every penny from the sale of this song will go to the Derby homeless charity, Doorways, and i will be completely transparent about it. (If anyone can advise how to make payments go direct to the charity, that would be great!)
Look Away was reviewed as perhaps the best modern day protest song you can hope to hear, by Boff of Chumbawumba.
I wrote this song years and years ago. Before any mention of Brexit. Before i knew about food banks. I think the NHS was under the first signs of threat and the camps at Calais were just reaching the news. Before thousands of people had drowned in the sea, seeking safety or died at the hands of our own government through it's cruel austerity measures. Before these times became so dark and before our nation became so divided. When i listen to it now, its like some strange premonition and all I can think to do with it is offer it to help others in need.
lyrics
The government say "These folks cannot stay"
They're taking the homes of the children away.
And the anarchists rise up and shout "Give us our say!"
Against police armed with riot sheilds and pepper spray.
Look away, look away,
From the news of today,
Its none of our business anyway.
Look away, look away,
Theres nothing to see,
Its nothing to do with me.
The government say the old folks are okay,
But they cant afford heating on a cold winters day,
And the anarchists rise up and shout "Give us our say!"
But the police just arrest them and lock them away.
Look away, look away,
From the news of today,
Its none of our business anyway.
Look away, look away,
Theres nothing to see,
Its nothing to do with me.
The government say they're cutting the pay
Of the people who teach us and heal us each day,
And the anarchists rise up and say "Give us our say!"
And the government pass laws to take powers away.
Look away, look away,
From the news of today,
Its none of our business anyway.
Look away, look away,
Theres nothing to see,
Its nothing to do with me.
Well the windows are broken, the cupboards are bare,
The governments boots boys march everywhere,
No-one complains. Its as if no-one cares.
But deep down inside we know nobody dares.
Our chance to rise up and shout "Give us our say!"
Is lost to the realms of yesterday.
